1st Prize in realization, office & residential - Hamburg, 2017
With the unique jury's decision to appoint our design as the winner of the competition with six national architectural firm, a unique opportunity was perceived to shape the post-war urban Hanseatic city clear and explicit with respect to the history of Hamburg.
The newly established in the 1920s Domstraße has created a historically non-existent district boundary that separates the old town with its town hall from the Kontorhaus district. Along this interface is the cathedral square with the excavation sites of Hammaburg as the site of the oldest settlement center of Hamburg directly vis-a-vis the neighborhood property.
Our design takes this unique opportunity and creates a high quality situation at the intersection of Altstadt / Kontorhausviertel / Willy-Brandt-Straße. A city block was placed parallel to the street, creating an extremely memorable situation: the landmark on the border of two or three quarters, in particular the urbanistic desirable entry and exit into the old city center with its cathedral square.
With about 10,000 sqm of office space (about 19,000 sqm GFA), about 60 apartments including subsidized housing, as well as about 1,250 sqm of commercial space and restaurants, a part of the city’s history is embellished and contributes to the ensemble also to the revitalization of the city center.
